Teaching that we should correct those mistakes that we can, but accept that we cannot always achieve what we want in life, is the quintessence of what it means to be a parent. This forgiveness of ourselves is a powerful thing to communicate and can have profound effects upon the attitude and behaviour of children. This is a lesson that will last a lifetime and parents are the best ones to instruct children in this belief.

A final note needs to be made about the suicidal individual. Some self-mutilation is not logical and instead involves questionable conclusions or actions based upon faulty thinking. In these cases the individual feels trapped by what seems to be an intolerable situation and the only way out is death. In these cases, the problem has deteriorated to the point that a parent can no longer deal with the child’s actions and referral to a professional counsellor is needed.
If your youngster has indicated, even obliquely, that they are so frustrated that they would be better off dead then do not attempt to correct the situation yourself but immediately seek the assistance of a professional. In doing this you are being a responsible adult recognizing that nobody can be all things to somebody else. Once again, by this action you are helping your child to become a responsible adult.
